The Greater Salt Municipality is one of the oldest municipalities in the Kingdom. The municipality’s mission is to continue contributing to the development of the local community and raising its standard of living by creating a sound and healthy climate and providing the minimum requirements for life, taking advantage of all possibilities to achieve a better life for the citizen.
The Greater Salt Municipality Council provides basic services to the city’s residents, the most prominent of these services (waste, street maintenance and paving, street lighting, organizing and licensing construction operations, and issuing crafts and industries licenses) in addition to (38) other services.

Sources and references differed in determining the reason for naming the city, as it may be derived from the Latin word (Saltus) meaning forest, or from the Syriac word salt, meaning rock and hard stone, or al-Salt, meaning prominent, level and smooth, and so on. The modern authorities extended in all directions around the (old) town, which was originally established on three main mountains:
